Dr. Dora Adler’s life has been in disarray since the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, but when she gets bitten by one of the undead, her whole world is turned upside down. Held captive in a secret underground lab, the tall, muscular hunk in the next cell is her only hope for salvation. Unfortunately, he claims to be a werewolf. Yeah, and she’s supposedly a witch. Dirk Gunderson is an alpha Arbor pack werewolf. Captured and collared, he’s sold to the zombie lab in hopes his blood serum can create a vaccine. He needs to escape, but not without the hot little brunette witch. In the midst of enemy werewolves and the hordes of undead, Dirk and Dora’s sexual tension ignites a blaze hotter than the desert highway. Along their journey, they battle the inevitable: a werewolf must never take a witch as a mate.
Let me start out by saying that I’m not particularly a zombie person. Which is funny considering I love dystopian books. Now add to that the fact that this book is a paranormal romance. So this book has a little bit of everything. Zombies, werewolves, witches, humans… yup, even talks about aliens at one point. When I started reading this book I didn’t expect much and thought a little bit of it was cheesy. Once the storyline picked up though it turned out to be an easy read. With the threat of being surrounded by zombies around every corner I was on the edge of my seat hoping that the main characters of the book would prevail!
The story starts out with Dora. She is a doctor and absolutely loves her job. The women in her family seem to have a trait of dying when they turn 27 though. Dora’s not sure why, but she walks into work on her birthday not expecting to live much longer. Yup, she loves her job so much that she’s working on her birthday! The world seems to be succumbing to Z-phage, a strain of zombie virus. Once you are bitten you usually turn within a day or so, maybe a little longer. It’s Dora’s job to diagnose people and make sure they aren’t in the early stages of it. Something goes wrong though and she is bitten. She’s taken down to the quarantine cells in the basement of the hospital. Once you turn they end your misery with one shot to the head. Right now there is no cure for Z-phage. Being bitten and turning into a zombie only to be shot seems to be right up her alley since she’s turning 27 that day. Yup, she’ll die just like the other women in her family. As she waits for the inevitable, it doesn’t happen. She watches the guy in the cell across from her slowly succumb to it and soon he’s met with a bullet. Why hasn’t she turned yet? She’s apparently immune, but why? How? She ends up being taken to some secret lab where this evil scientist does experiments on her. After a while, this hunk of gorgeous male gets thrown in the cell across from her. That’s when she meets Dirk. She doesn’t want to admit it but she is extremely attracted to him. And the story goes from there…
I’ll fast forward a little. Dora and Dirk end up escaping and heading towards California to rescue her brother and niece. Along the way they grow closer. Dirk can’t imagine living his life without her and wants to take her as his mate, but it’s forbidden. With what Dora is they could never be together. No matter what Dirk tells his inner wolf though, he’s not hearing any of it.
If you love paranormal romance and dystopian books, you should definitely read this book. Very suspenseful and it definitely has the “thrill of the chase” in the romance department. I loved it! Once you get past the beginning and really get into the guts of this book it takes off!
